How to import legacy requirement IDs into TFS 2013? -

i trying import existing requirements tfs 2013 (currently maintained in word doc). however, need preserve existing, pre-assigned requirement ids (for tracking against existing test cases outside of tfs, etc.). i've come multiple ways of doing it:

keep part of requirement title add description requirement add tag legacy req id appropriate req in tfs add new field requirement template (or utilize existing unused field)

all of these seem pretty unclean me except "new field" option, i'd rather avoid changing work item template if could.

are there other/better ways this? has done similar before?

i add together field of work items called external id utilize purpose. it's useful link tfs work items ticket id in help desk ticketing system.
